Hellas Gold puzzled by move to suspend Skouries mining

Hellas Gold, the company responsible for the mining project in Skouries forest in northern Greece that was suspended Wednesday by the government, said it was “surprised” by the decision and insisted it had not broken any rules.

“Hellas Gold has never broken the law and is currently reviewing the ministerial decision with which we disagree and which puts at risk the livelihood of 5,000 residents in northeastern Halkidiki,” said Hellas Gold managing director and vice president Michalis Theodorakopoulos.

Earlier, Energy Minister Panos Skourletis said work at the gold mine would have to be suspended because the firm went beyond the limits of the technical studies carried out for the project.

“The company has violated the terms of its technical studies. This means a temporary halt in work,” Skourletis said, without giving further details.

“The government welcomes investment, but companies must respect the terms to which they are bound.”
