ATHEX: Stock market’s trading volume tops 50 mln

The market’s growing optimism regarding the outcome of this Sunday’s election, and the likelihood of it leading to the creation of a stable government, saw stocks chalk up more gains on Wednesday while trading volume climbed above 50 million for the first time in five weeks.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 692.44 points, adding 1.51 percent to Tuesday’s 682.17 points. The large-cap FTSE 25 index expanded 1.98 percent to end at 202.95 points.

Banks led the way with their index advancing 6.49 percent. Alpha climbed 9.29 percent, Piraeus gained 8.18 percent and Eurobank increased 8.11 percent. Titan Cement fell 3.33 percent.

In total 58 stocks headed north, 35 were southbound and 18 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 50.6 million euros, up from Tuesday’s 27.9 million.
