Gov’t hopes to do some PR at Posidonia

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be launching the Posidonia 2016 international shipping event on Monday evening, Shipping Minister Theodoros Dritsas announced on Thursday, in a bid to show the government’s commitment to the sector and to steal some of its shine.

The major shipping exhibition, which will run until next Friday at the Metropolitan Expo Center next to Athens Airport, is taking place under the auspices of the Shipping Ministry, and Dritsas stated that the government’s goal is to strengthen the competitiveness of Greek shipping and promote cooperation with other shipping nations.

The event will be graced by the presence of International Maritime Organization Secretary General Kitack Lim and European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc. Dritsas stressed the presence of his counterparts from other shipping nations such as the UK, Hong Kong and Panama, including the UK’s minister of state at the Department for Transport, Robert Goodwill: “We wish to discuss possible synergies and the respect of international rules,” Dritsas explained to Kathimerini English Edition.

The Posidonia Games opened on Friday with the Posidonia Cup yacht race in Faliro Bay. The winners were Bullet (Caribe Tankers) in the Performance class, Alter Ego (ABS Europe Ltd) in the Standard class, Enjoy (Atlas Marine) in the IRC, and Navisa (Neda Maritime Agency) in the Classic.

Saturday sees the 5 km Posidonia Running Event in Piraeus and the Posidonia Golf Tournament in Glyfada. The Games end on Sunday with the Shipsoccer tournament in Nea Smyrni.
