AmCham calls on government to ensure banks’ smooth operation

The American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce issued on Tuesday a dramatic plea to the government to restore the smooth operation of the credit system by easing or lifting the capital controls it imposed just over a year ago, in view of the domino of business shutdowns in recent months.

“We continue to witness tragic developments among businesses and honorable entrepreneurs who are unable to meet their obligations due to the continuing recession and the general and indiscriminate penalization of businesspeople and bank officials for decisions regarding loan issues and debt arrangements,” said the statement released by the chamber.

“To avoid any further adverse situations, the American-Hellenic Chamber is calling on all parties involved, particularly so the government and the public administration which legislate, to proceed immediately to the necessary regulation that will rapidly restore the regulatory framework guaranteeing the smooth operation of the banks and the support of both the businesspeople and the jobs,” the chamber stressed.
