ATHEX: Bank stock decline leads Athens bourse lower

Wednesday’s session at the Greek bourse was almost identical to Tuesday’s, with moderate losses for the majority of stocks, with trading volume remaining below 40 million euros and investors playing the waiting game.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 757.49 points, shedding 0.57 percent from Tuesday’s 761.85 points. The large-cap FTSE-26 index contracted 0.43 percent to close at 2,002.62 points.

Banks took a dive – ending 2.63 percent lower. Eurobank slumped 4.21 percent, Piraeus fell 3.80 percent, Attica dropped 3.51 percent, Alpha decreased 2.25 percent and National gave up 1.33 percent.

Other blue chips had a mixed day, as Fourlis Holdings grew 4.29 percent, Folli Follie rose 1.77 percent and Coca-Cola HBC improved 1.62 percent, while Ellaktor conceded 2.50 percent and Jumbo slipped 2.47 percent.

In total 43 stocks recorded gains, 51 took losses and 20 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 39.2 million euros, just above Tuesday’s 39.1 million.

In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange advanced 0.57 percent to 74.26 points.
