ASE momentarily vaults over 4,000-point level

Stocks gained yesterday on the Athens Stock Exchange, closing just shy of 4,000 points and establishing a fresh 64-month high. The ASE composite share price index closed at 3,994.06 points, a gain of 26.01 points or 0.66 percent. During the session it reached 4,014.38 points before profit-taking kicked in. The FTSE/Athex 20 index of blue chips gained 0.65 percent to close at 2,196.65 points. Mid-caps gained 0.86 percent and small-caps declined 1.20 percent. The new FTSE/Athex International index gained 0.63 percent to close at 5,472.83 points. Among blue chips, the biggest gainers were jewelry maker and retailer Folli-Follie (6.40 percent to 25.28 euros), refiner Motor Oil (2.73 percent to 23.36 euros), refiner Hellenic Petroleum (2.50 percent to 13.10 euros), mobile telecommunications service provider Cosmote (2.29 percent to 19.68 euros), cement producer Titan (1.94 percent to 34.76 euros) and National Bank (1.04 percent to 38.80 euros). By contrast, significant losses were sustained by telecommunications equipment manufacturer Intracom (3.31 percent to 7 euros) and metals group Viohalco (1.69 percent to 8.12 euros). Out of 326 traded shares, 135 gained, 151 declined and 40 ended unchanged. Turnover reached 502.79 million euros, including 90.2 million in prearranged trades.
