Environment and Public Works Minister Giorgos Souflias (left) flanked by Attiko Metro’s president, Giorgos Yiannis, yesterday while unveiling plans to extend the Athens metro’s blue line to Piraeus. The 8.2km extension, budgeted at 570 million euros, will begin early next year and be completed in 2012 with seven more stations. Currently, the line is being extended west to Haidari and the station at Aegaleo is projected for delivery in April 2007. Souflias said part of the cost will be covered by EU subsidies and the securitization of revenues from the Attiki Odos highway, for which the concession will not be renewed.
