Economy and Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis in Athens’s Syntagma Square yesterday, inaugurating a free wireless Internet connection service for the public. Based on the 802.11b/g (WiFi) standard, the Athens WiFi is an 18-month-long pilot project available to anyone with a laptop or a hand-held computer (PDA) and is intended to familiarize Athenians with the benefits of broadband connection and wireless Internet technology. The facility, part of a 450-million-euro government program to promote fast Internet until 2008, will be extended to 85 more points around the country.
