Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas…

Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas speaking at yesterday’s inauguration of the new, combined-cycle power plant producing electricity and heating from biogas from the Ano Liosia waste landfill, Greece’s biggest. The plant, which started operating experimentally last October, cost 15.5 million euros, including 9.3 million in European Union subsidies, and has a combined thermal capacity of 9.7 megawatts. The power produced will be sold to the transmission system administrator DESMHE. The plant saves 61,200 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere, and the thermal energy produced is the equivalent of 2,500 tons of oil, valued at 1.75 million euros.
