Dairy farmers protest at low prices in Sofia

SOFIA (AP) – Hundreds of Bulgarian milk producers held a protest rally here yesterday to demand more state subsidies and higher EU production quotas. The milk producers’ association said farmers needed higher subsidies as they were paying more for cattle feed than they got for their milk. Protesters also called on the government to press for higher production quotas from the EU. The association said implementing the current quota would require 200,000 of the country’s 350,000 cows to be slaughtered.
