Matthew J. Bryza, US deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, meets Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis yesterday, with whom he discussed Balkan and energy issues. Speaking at a conference separately, Bryza said the United States aimed at sharpening competition in the natural gas sector by bolstering the negotiating position of Greece, Turkey, Italy, Georgia and Azerbaijan vis-a-vis Russia and its Gazprom monopoly. He noted that Greece receives 80 percent of its gas from only one company, but stressed, ‘our goal is not to have a standoff with Russia on energy.’
