Sit-in protest for greater safety

Workers from the Perama dockyards, where eight people were killed last week while working on a tanker, staged a two-hour protest at the offices of the Greek Shipowners’ Union yesterday. With a banner reading ‘No more workers’ blood sacrificed for the sake of profit,’ the protesters demanded an improvement in safety conditions. The dockers, who have called a 24-hour strike for Thursday, claim that safety is more lax at Perama than at other dockyards. Two workers were killed last July and five died in October 2001 in similiar accidents at Perama.
