Stocks rise on foreign gains
Greek stocks advanced more than 3 percent yesterday, tracking the solid gains of their European peers, as blue chips outperformed the broader market. The Athens Exchange’s (ATHEX) benchmark general index finished up 3.21 percent, at 1,845.91 points, close to session highs. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index jumped 3.68 percent while the small-cap FTSE/ATHEX 80 underperformed, rising 1.26 percent. In late trade yesterday, Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC indices were rising by more than 7 percent, on hopes that new government spending will limit the duration and depth of the global economic slowdown. Turnover on the Athens bourse fell to 113.8 million euros from 140 million in the previous session.
