Stocks retreat in thin trade

The Athens bourse lost nearly 2 percent yesterday on thin turnover but small-caps bucked the trend, ending in positive territory. The Athens Exchange’s benchmark general index lost 1.99 percent to end at 1,774.28 points, just off session lows. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped 2.01 percent. Gaming company OPAP tumbled 7.22 percent, while the Bank of Cyprus shed 5.51 percent to 2.23 euros. The small-cap FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 0.31 percent. European and US stock markets were mixed late yesterday amid worries about the exposure of financial institutions to an alleged $50 billion fraudulent investment scheme in the USA. Turnover fell to 93.2 million euros versus 134 million in the previous session.
