Stocks drop but hold 1,500 pts

The Athens bourse fell 1.62 percent yesterday on heavy losses for banks, as the benchmark general index fell below 1,500 points in intra-session trade. The Athens Exchange’s benchmark general index ended at 1,510.99 points after dipping to 1,478 points during the session. Banks tumbled 4.66 percent to levels not since since January 1998. National Bank ended at 9.38 euros, off 4.98 percent for the day and Eurobank slumped 7.39 percent to 3.76 euros. Eurobank is expected to announce full-year 2008 profit figures today. OTE telecom, which has a market value of 5.1 billion euros, outperformed the market, gaining 2.33 percent to 10.54 euros. Turnover reached 137.5 million euros versus 126.5 million in the previous session.
