Stocks post rise for a fifth day

Stocks continued their climb on the local bourse for the fifth successive session yesterday after the one-day break for the national holiday on Wednesday, as global markets have maintained their rebound momentum. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index rose to 1,714 points yesterday, an increase of 1.16 percent over Tuesday’s close. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 2.01 percent to end at 867.92 points. Banks pulled the blue chip index higher, as their sectoral index also showed gains of 4.36 percent. Outperforming among blue chips were Marfin Popular Bank (up 11.64 percent), Bank of Cyprus (7.05 percent), ATEbank (6.36 percent), Alpha Bank (6.32 percent) and Marfin Investment Group (6.18 percent). Turnover reached a significant 161.4 million euros.
