Self-service gas stations to be introduced

Self-service gas stations and automated petrol pumps offering fuel around the clock are likely to be introduced to the Greek market soon, after the Development Ministry announced they will be allowed to operate in the country. The ministry said in a statement yesterday the move will help boost competition in the sector, offer consumers a greater range of choices and possibly lead to lower prices. ‘Taking into account the particular care needed for people’s safety, state services have issued analytical instructions that describe the safety and fire protection measures gas stations must adopt in order to reduce the chances of accidents taking place,’ the ministry said. Gas stations can continue to operate staffed services if they wish to do so, the ministry added.
