Fresh decline for local stocks

Stocks on the Greek bourse continued their rapid decline for the second consecutive day yesterday, with banks once again leading the slide. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index dropped to 2,162.34 points yesterday, falling by 5.16 percent from Tuesday’s close. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index went down by 5.38 percent to end at 1,097.17 points. All blue chips registered considerable losses, led by Alpha Bank (down 10.03 percent), Hellenic Postbank (8.91 percent), ATEbank (8.59 percent), Marfin Popular Bank (8.44 percent), Marfin Investment Group (7.54 percent), Piraeus Bank (6.93 percent) and EFG Eurobank (6.62 percent). National Bank shares dropped 3.83 percent to close at 17.60 euros. Turnover reached 275.9 million euros.
