EBEA refers OLP strike to justice

The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEA) yesterday filed an injunction against the ongoing strike by dockworkers at Piraeus port’s cargo terminal, who are protesting the concession of the harbor’s container station to Chinese company Cosco. EBEA president Constantinos Michalos called for judicial authorities to declare the strike illegal and abusive. The case will be heard on Monday morning. Port employees reacted strongly against this development, while Economy and Merchant Marine Minister Louka Katseli also disapproved, suggesting «it is a move that can only harm the progress of negotiations as we are in their final stage.» Also yesterday, the governing board of listed company Piraeus Port Authority (OLP), appointed by the previous government, tendered its resignation, with Katseli accepting it. The Communist Party and leftist parliamentary group SYRIZA accused the government of reneging on its promise to cancel the deal with Cosco and of trying to find a way to continue the policy of the previous government.
