Bourse fails to hold early gains

Stocks on the local bourse could not sustain the gains they registered in the first few hours of the session yesterday and ended the day mostly with losses, despite the favorable climate in Europe. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,858.49 points yesterday, shrinking by 0.45 percent from Tuesday’s close at 1,866.87 points. Over the course of the day, however, the index had risen by as much as 1.76 percent. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 0.53 percent to end at 919.87 points. Hellenic Petroleum and OTE telecom outperformed blue chips with a rise of 3.25 percent each, while Public Power Corporation gained 2.13 percent. Worst off was Titan cement (down 5.32 percent), followed by Marfin Investment Group (2.79 percent) and Coca-Cola HBC (2.66 percent). Turnover came to 149.7 million euros.
