Athens International Airport said yesterday passenger traffic rose 2.8 percent in the first five months of the year, to almost 6 million people. The total number of people passing through Greece’s biggest airport was 5.8 million, up from 5.6 million for the same period a year ago, the company said in a statement. International travelers rose 1.9 percent and domestic passengers increased 4.2 percent. Industry officials expect the number of tourists from abroad this summer to remain the same as last year but with a drop in the amount spent by visitors of up to 10 percent. Tourism accounts for 16 percent of Greece’s gross domestic product and about one in five jobs.
