Conference center hopes for Faliro sports venue

Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos announced yesterday he will launch a tender in the next few days for the long-term lease of the Faliro Sports Hall and its transformation and operation as a conference center. The venue was built to host tae kwon do and handball events during the Athens 2004 Olympics, but has since seen little use, mostly for exhibitions and political party conferences. Sources suggest the lease term will range between 25 and 30 years and that the tender will also concern the concession of the venue’s surrounding area, to be used for additional exhibition requirements and supplementary activities to the operation of the conference center. Geroulanos further said he would push for the sale of a 49 percent stake in the Mont Parnes Casino on Mount Parnitha, in northern Attica. He also suggested that the promotion program for Greek tourism would place greater emphasis on Internet advertising.
