57th anniversary of Athens’s liberation
Soldiers of the Presidential Guard raise the Greek flag on the Acropolis yesterday during celebrations to mark the 57th anniversary of the capital’s liberation from German forces toward the end of World War II. Top military officials attended the ceremony, along with Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos. The Nazis occupied the capital on April 27, 1941, raising the swastika on the ancient citadel. The German flag was hauled down a couple of months later during a daring night ascent by Manolis Glezos and Lakis Santas. Mr. Papandreou will try to play an interventionary role, so that a dialogue on the issues that currently concern the international community at this time can include as many governments and states as possible. Among these is Syria, as are other countries in the region, Reppas said.
