Winter hits all of Greece

Heavy snowfall, torrential rain and powerful winds caused havoc across Greece on Saturday and yesterday, disrupting road, rail and sea transportation, flooding homes, destroying roads and wiping out crops. The central regions of Pieria and Larissa were hit hardest, with the government declaring them in a state of emergency, as floodwaters covered their fertile plains and turned roads into rivers. The Athens-Thessaloniki railway line re-opened at 3 p.m. yesterday after being cut for several hours due to the heavy rains in Pieria province. Heavy snow fell across northern and central Greece. Snow was expected to fall on the mountains around Athens last night. Communications were disrupted in Evros, Thrace and throughout Macedonia as snow blocked roads. Sailings across the country were banned. The harsh weather is expected to continue today.
