Employers answerable for unfair demotions
Workers who are unfairly demoted or stripped of all responsibilities are entitled to compensation payment from their employers, the Supreme Court has decided in a ruling made public yesterday. The court awarded 9,980 euros to a man who had been in charge of a company’s branch in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, until he was transferred south to Agrinion. But the employee in question successfully fought off the unwelcome posting through legal action. However, instead of being reinstated to his position, the man was sent to a different department, where he effectively had no duties. The Supreme Court found that this constituted an abuse of power on behalf of the man’s superiors, as there was no good reason to relieve the employee of his responsibilities.
