What will be the priorities for Athens during its six-month tenure of the EU presidency? The Greek presidency believes that EU policies need to have a steady orientation in five areas, regardless of events in the international arena. – Constantly advancing internal mechanisms in the 15 [member states] and the 10 [members-to-be] which will make enlargement a real success. – Pushing through policies at EU level which concern the real problems of the European community. – Elevating the EU to an ever more powerful economic and political role in the global system. – The EU managing to provide solutions, through the policies it develops, to the complex problems of globalization and to earn credibility both internally and vis-a-vis third countries. – The EU developing cooperation with major players in international policy so it participates more dynamically in the management of global balances.
