On the first day…

On the first day of their 48-hour strike, a few hundred of Athens’s 15,000 taxi drivers held a protest march to Parliament yesterday as legislation reforming their sector was debated in committee. Drivers are particularly opposed to a proposal that they form cooperatives and that they renew their vehicles every eight years. Transport Minister Christos Verelis said the limit would be extended to nine years. The strike ends at 5 a.m. tomorrow.
