Niki Goulandris has contributed significantly to nature conservation and believes that the hope for the future lies in the interplay between biological and cultural processes. In 2002, Goulandris was a member of the Greek delegation to the Johannesburg Summit and to the Rio conference in 1992. She has served in an official capacity in many Greek and international organizations. Showered with international recognition, various honors and academic awards for her achievements, she was elected «Woman of Europe» in 1991 by the European Commission. Goulandris has a parallel career as a well-known botanical painter, having painted about 800 Greek indigenous plants. She travels worldwide visiting natural reserves as well as threatened ecosystems under different cultural conditions both north and south. Often invited to lecture in universities and other institutions for the past 20 years, she has led a campaign to promote cultural values linking nature, man and society.
