Suicide of child porn suspect

An advertising firm employee charged with participation in an Internet child pornography ring apparently hanged himself early yesterday in the Athens police headquarters where he had been detained since Saturday. Alexandros Kallias, 55, was found hanged in a toilet that served the detention cells on the seventh floor of the Alexandras Avenue complex, during the change of guard just after 5 a.m. He had used the strap of his overnight bag. A coroner confirmed that Kallias had killed himself, while an investigation was ordered into the death. Sources said Kallias left a suicide note explaining that he had been unable to bear the public humiliation that followed the publication of his name by the police and the subsequent TV coverage. The story was taken up with relish by the press. Five men were charged with running the child pornography ring, while another seven were charged with public indecency and drug offenses after a police raid on an Athens gay club owned by one of the alleged pornographers.
