Transport workers mull Tuesday strike

Hundreds of public transport workers rode motorcycles from the center of Athens to the Transport Ministry on Friday to protest the government’s reforms of the sector.

Transport workers’ unions are due to meet this weekend to decide whether to hold a 24-hour strike on Tuesday, when the bill, which proposes the restructuring of public transport firms and the transfer of some personnel to other departments, is due to be voted into law.

Public transport workers have been holding strikes and stoppages almost every week since the beginning of December to protest the government’s reforms and price hikes.

Sources sugggested that the protests may intensify if the transfer of staff begins.
