Attica governor calls for more staff after embezzlement

Attica Governor Yiannis Sgouros has called on the government to reexamine the funding of local authorities after claiming that staffing levels were to blame for a financial manager at the Attica Prefecture allegedly embezzling 700,000 euros of funds.

Sgouros suspended the unnamed employee yesterday after it emerged that between 2002 and 2010, he had been approving disability payments to a relative who had no health problems.

Sgouros said that the lack of trained personnel to carry out checks on finances was to blame for the incident.

?For these kinds of cases to be limited, we have to reexamine the staff shortages,? said the Attica governor.

Attica Prefecture no longer exists, as it became a region under last year?s local government reforms.
