Public transport to shut down next Wednesday

Public transport workers have decided to stage a 24-hour strike next Wednesday, March 9, but bus drivers have canceled two planned work stoppages for this week.

Following a meeting of union representatives on Tuesday, it was decided that none of the modes of transport would operate next Wednesday in protest at the government?s reforms of the sector.

However, bus drivers, called off the work stoppages they were due to stage work stoppages on Wednesday and Friday this week.

It is thought that this decision was linked to a change in the union leadership. Nikos Kouloubaritsis, the head of the bus drivers? union for the past few years, stepped down last week.

The bus drivers are due to meet on March 9 to hold a vote about what action to take next.

Union representatives from all modes of transport are due to meet on Friday, March 11 to decide whether they will follow up Wednesday?s general strike with further action.
