Court postpones hearing of residents’ landfill appeal

The Council of State on Wednesday postponed until May 4 the hearing of an appeal by residents of Keratea, southeastern Attica, against the government?s plan to build a landfill near their community, prompting Keratea residents to march from the court?s premises on Panepistimiou Street to Parliament. The demonstrators also protested outside a branch of Eurobank which they allege forms part of the consortium that has undertaken the construction of the landfill.

In the early hours of Wednesday, a group of around 25 youths managed to elude a police cordon before smashing up and setting alight three bulldozers parked on the site slated for the construction of the landfill. The youths are all believed to be residents of Keratea.
