Students protest against PM on Syros

Riot police fired tear gas on Monday afternoon to disperse a group of students who attempted to enter a venue on the Aegean island of Syros where Prime Minister George Papandreou was delivering a speech to local entrepreneurs.

There were reports of minor scuffles while one police officer was said to have sustained injuries in the clashes which occurred outside the building housing the Cyclades Chamber of Commerce in the island?s capital of Ermoupoli.

?We are by your side to discuss your problems and highlight the many prospects open for the islands of the Aegean,? Papandreou said in a speech that was broadcast by teleconference to members of the chambers of commerce of the Cyclades group of islands.

The prime minister, who earlier in the day visited the Neorio shipyards on Syros, called for the harnessing of new technologies to boost Greece?s tourism sector which is largely dependent on its many islands.
