Two inmates escape Korydallos, three police suspended

A senior police officer and two guards at Korydallos Prison have been suspended after two inmates escaped while they were in the jail?s psychiatric ward.

A preliminary judicial investigation has also been launched into how the prisoners, two Albanians aged 34 and 28, were able to escape while being treated by doctors.

Police said that the pair sawed through the iron bars on their window and used bed sheets to climb down from the first floor room they were being held in. But it is not known how they got over the maximum security prison?s outer wall.

The inmates, who have both been convicted of drug offenses, escaped at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

Korydallos Prison has been at the center of several escapes that have embarrassed authorities, especially those of Vassilis Palaiocostas and Alket Rizai, who twice broke out with the help of a helicopter.
