Protesters defend Altar of 12 Gods
A protest against plans to cover up a significant archaeological find in Monastiraki, central Athens, led to services on the Kifissia-Piraeus electric railway (ISAP) being suspended for more than an hour on Thursday. Demonstrators who want to prevent railway tracks been laid over the Altar of the Twelve Gods blocked the line. Archaeologists believe the remnants of the site, which were uncovered during works on the southbound tracks of the ISAP, are part of the monument marking the heart of the ancient city center.
However, the ancient altar is due to be covered over again so that the engineering works can be completed and the electric railway, which is not running between Monastiraki and Attiki, can resume normal service.
