Supermarket staff on strike

Employees of regional supermarket chain Arvanitidis participated in a series of protests outside four of the company’s outlets in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on Saturday, while a larger rally was organized outside a company supermarket situated in the northern port city’s center on the same day.

The protests were organized by the chain’s union as part of a strike called by employees who were seeking four months in upaid wages, the signing of a new collective contract and for management to recall layoffs.

Staff members, who vowed to continue their industrial action, are also opposed to shops located in holiday resort areas being allowed to do business on Sundays.
