Gun used in Pefki clean, police say
A gun found at the scene of a shootout in the northern Athens suburb of Pefki on Wednesday that left two policemen injured has not been used in domestic terrorist attacks, according to the results of police ballistics tests.
But sources said on Thursday that a terrorist link has not been ruled out and Citizens’ Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis told reporters that authorities were not treating Wednesday’s shootout as a straightforward criminal affair.
Two officers were badly hurt on Wednesday evening when one of two suspects they had stopped for an identity check pulled out a gun and fired at them, badly wounding them both. The officers fired back, hitting one of the men while the other suspect fled in the officers? patrol car. A passerby who was injured in the shootout has not been identified, police said on Thursday.
The two officers were in a stable condition on Thursday while the 22-year-old detained suspect was to undergo surgery for multiple bullet wounds to his legs.
Police published the photograph of the 22-year-old suspect after he allegedly gave them a false name, appealing to the public for information about his identity.
