Gang made tidy sum from stealing dumpsters

Most people would not think there could be much money in stealing roadside dumpsters but, like most things, if you steal enough of them, they can turn out to be profitable loot, as a gang operating west of Athens discovered until the police caught up with them on Saturday.

According to officers, the gang stole some 100 dumpsters over the past few months, earning them about 120,000 euros. Police said they arrested two members of the gang, who are Greeks aged 43 and 27. Law enforcement is looking for three more suspected accomplices.

The two men were arrested on a plot of land where they had allegedly stored two dumpsters stolen from Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, and Votanikos, near the city center. There have been arrests in the past of people stealing iron grates from drains, which like the dumpsters, were sold as scrap metal, but this is the first time thieves have been caught stealing dumpsters in large quantities.
