Pupils to reuse textbooks to save money

As part of the government?s cost-cutting drive, Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou on Monday announced a new initiative foreseeing the reuse of text books at state schools.

Diamantopoulou called on pupils to return textbooks from previous academic years to their teachers so that the books can be used by other students.

Books that are in a bad state will be recycled. ?The initiative is a nationwide effort aimed at increasing respect for public property,? Diamantopoulou said.

According to ministry figures, some 45 million books, costing 70 to 80 million euros, are distributed to pupils every year.
