Signs of hope in Keratea row

The beginnings of a breakthrough appeared to emerge on Wednesday in the deadlock between authorities and residents of Keratea, a village southeast of Athens, who have been vehemently opposing the construction of a landfill in the area.

Officials representing the broader municipality of Lavreotiki proposed the construction of a sanitary waste facility and a garbage processing plant on a site next to the old local landfill.

According to sources, Environment Minister Tina Birbili is receptive to the proposal in principle as it does not change the government?s broader waste planning strategy dramatically.

However she asked for certain modifications including an increase in the volume of waste that would be sent to the facilities.

Normally the next stage would be for Birbili to submit the proposal for approval from her superiors, but in view of yesterday?s rapid political developments this step is likely to be postponed indefinitely
