EU court action over zoos and pollution

The European Commission decided yesterday to take Greece to court over its failure to implement EU regulations on pollution and the welfare of animals in zoos, and warned of similar action on uncontrolled waste dumping. Greece – and another seven EU members, including the UK – is being taken to the European Court for ignoring an April 2002 deadline to announce action on improving the lot of animals in zoos. The Commission also said it would take Greece and seven other EU members to court for missing a year-old deadline to implement EU regulations on reducing waste from old vehicles and recycling used parts. Furthermore Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom said the Commission would take action against Greece unless something is done about the 1,458 illegal rubbish dumps operating in the country.
