Fewer illegal immigrants arrested in first half of 2011
There was a substantial reduction in the number of illegal immigrants caught entering Greece during the first half of this year compared to 2010, according to police statistics made public Friday.
The police said that it made 34,534 arrests during the first six months of the year, compared to 61,028 between January and June last year. The decline was also reflected in the number of traffickers caught, which fell from 649 to 336.
The main point of entry was Greece?s land border with Turkey, where the number of immigrants arrested rose from 13,266 to 16,202.
