EU states to help fight large wildfires
France and Spain on Thursday pledged to send six firefighting planes to the northern prefecture of Evros after a huge fire broke out near the village of Lefkimi and spread quickly, fanned by strong winds, threatening homes.
Authorities in Evros declared a state of emergency in the prefecture after the fire, which stretched for some five kilometers, approached the borders of some small settlements.
Another blaze that broke out near the site of Ancient Kalydon in the Peloponnese prompted the evacuation of a local village and monastery.
