Austria convicts Greeks of people smuggling
Twenty-two Greeks have been slapped with partially suspended sentences of between nine and 24 months after a court in the Austrian town of Eisenstadt found them guilty of illegal trafficking.
The accused were allegedly paid to travel on a Greek tour bus into Austria, posing as tourists, while 30 Afghan immigrants hid inside a purpose-built wooden cabin underneath. Austrian police uncovered the scam during a routine check in August.
Meanwhile, border police in Greece?s northeast Evros region on Wednesday arrested a 37-year-old suspected human trafficker while he was trying to smuggle seven illegal migrants on a plastic dingy into the country.
