ND renews call for snap poll

Greece’s conservative opposition repeated its call for snap elections on Monday, while urging the socialist government to renegotiate a deal with the country’s foreign lenders.

?The government should renegotiate [the EU/IMF deal] instead of drawing pleasure from reactions to New Democracy’s position,? party spokesman Yiannis Michelakis told Skai television on Monday.

European officials, including ND’s conservative peers in the European Parliament, have often criticized the party’s vehement opposition to the so-called memorandum with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Michelakis said holding early elections is the only way to solve the debt-hit country’s problems and restore stability.

Polls show ND is ahead of ruling PASOK, but elections would not yield an outright winner as dissatisfaction among voters is running high.

In a highly symbolic development, protesters caused the cancellation on Friday of the annual military parade in Thessaloniki marking Greece?s rejection of Italy?s request to stand aside during World War II, and of several smaller parades across the country.
