Minors nabbed in ‘deaf’ racket

Four young Romanians were arrested on central Syntagma Square on Tuesday and will be facing fraud charges for pretending to be deaf, Athens police said.

The four minors, aged between 9 and 16, were allegedly displaying documents that falsely identified them as members of associations for the deaf and for children living on the streets, and extracting monetary donations from passers-by, using phoney sign language to convince potential donors.

During a search of their persons, police found 175 euros in cash as well as donation books for the «Association for the Deaf» and for the «International Homeless Association,» which listed the private details of five individuals, along with their signatures and pledges for a total of 1,176 euros.
