Court set to hear ex MP’s appeals for back pay, damages

The Athens Court of First Instance is this week to start hearing the first batch of appeals for back pay and compensation sought by 117 former MPs from the two main parties, Socialist PASOK and conservative New Democracy, which amount to hundreds of millions of euros.

The list of claimants include prominent politicians, many of whom have been implicated in scandals, such as Akis Tsochatzopoulos and Tassos Mantelis.

Most are basing their action on a law passed in 2008 which ruled that MPs should receive pay that is equal to the salaries of the country?s top judges. The former MPs are claiming that they have received smaller pensions and less pay than they were entitled to as a result of Parliament not applying the law on their wages.
