First snow in Peloponnese

The mountains of Aracadia in the central Peloponnese saw their first snowfall of the year on Tuesday, with only a few minor problems for motorists reported on the national highway from Tripoli to Ancient Olympia.

Authorities are anticipating more snow in the coming days as Greece is expected to be hit by a cold front sweeping in from France, which will bring a drop in temperatures across the board from Wednesday, rain to most parts of the country and snow on the highlands.

The deputy regional governor for Arcadia said that motorists are advised to use snow chains if traveling to the mountains in the area, whose picturesque villages are among some of the Peloponnese’s most popular winter holiday destinations.

Vangelis Giannakouras assured holidaymakers that the authorities have taken every precaution to ensure safe travel, adding that they have dispatched salt spreaders to various parts of the winding road network to clear snow and ice build-up.
