New metro station at Monastiraki…
The new metro station at Monastiraki in central Athens opened yesterday, 23 meters under the refurbished station at right. The hub now links Line 3 (from Ethniki Amynas) with Line 1, the Piraeus-Kifissia route. This 1.1-km extension from Syntagma Sq was the most difficult of the metro works due to unstable ground, subterranean water and old buildings on the route. Some 80,000 passengers are now to join the 450,000 using the metro daily.
